After reading chapter 11 and the following case 2.3 I would answer the questions from the case as follows:
I would describe Greg Mortenson as an authentic leader based upon the “story” which outlined his behavior, connectedness, compassion and passion for his purpose of repaying the villagers of Korphe, Afghanistan. Yet if what 60 Minutes discovered about Mr. Mortenson’s truth is factual then his moral reasoning and transparency are very flawed and his response’s, or lack thereof, seems to substantiate the claims of unethical behavior. Authentic Leadership focuses on whether a leader is genuine or “real” and an authentic leader is self-aware, self-regulating, open and honest. From what I read in this story, Mr. Mortenson will have a difficult time being viewed as an authentic leader now and in the future.
